Two tickers, one network — and a surprising number of people staking VTRS still can't explain what VNRG actually does. Here's the difference, in plain terms.
If you're new to Vitreus, the first thing that trips people up isn't staking mechanics or validator selection — it's the fact that the network runs on two separate tokens instead of one. Most blockchains you've probably used, like Ethereum or Solana, use a single native asset for everything: paying gas, securing the network through staking, and voting on governance. Vitreus deliberately splits that single job into two.
VTRS is the network's staking and governance token. VNRG is the network's gas token, used to pay for transaction fees and computation. They're not interchangeable, they don't move in lockstep, and understanding the difference matters whether you're just staking VTRS through a validator or thinking about running a validator node yourself.
Plain-English definition: VTRS is what you stake and what governs the network. VNRG is what you spend to actually use the network — sending transactions, interacting with smart contracts, and paying for compute.
VTRS is the asset most stakers interact with directly, and it serves a few core functions on Vitreus:

Single-token networks tie two very different economic forces to one asset: the speculative, governance-driven value of holding the token, and the practical, utility-driven cost of using the network. When gas fees are denominated in the same asset that people are staking and trading for governance rights, network usability can swing wildly with price. A spike in the token's price can make ordinary transactions prohibitively expensive, even if nothing about network congestion changed.
Vitreus's dual-token model is designed to decouple those two forces. VTRS can appreciate, depreciate, or fluctuate with market sentiment around governance and staking demand, while VNRG — the fee token — is intended to keep network usage costs more predictable regardless of what's happening to VTRS's price. This is a deliberate architectural choice rather than an accident of tokenomics, and it's part of what Vitreus points to as a differentiator versus single-token Layer 1s. Why this matters practically: If you're staking VTRS and also interacting with the network — deploying a contract, sending transactions — you need to hold both assets for different purposes. Staking doesn't require VNRG, but using the network does.
For most people whose only interaction with Vitreus is delegating VTRS to a validator and collecting staking rewards, the dual-token system has a fairly simple practical impact:

The moment you go beyond passive delegation — claiming rewards manually, moving VTRS between wallets, or interacting with a staking marketplace contract — that transaction needs to be paid for, and it's paid for in VNRG, not VTRS. This is a common source of confusion for newcomers who show up with VTRS in a wallet and can't figure out why a transaction fails: the wallet may be missing the small VNRG balance needed to cover gas.
Because they're separate assets, VTRS and VNRG can and do move independently. A staker tracking their portfolio value should watch VTRS price movement for their staked position, but shouldn't assume VNRG price swings reflect anything about their staking returns — they're largely unrelated variables.
It's worth being precise here, since the terminology can blur together — including on this site, where our own name borrows from the gas token. When we talk about VNode rewards, we're referring to the epoch rewards a validator earns for producing blocks and attesting correctly, and those rewards are denominated and distributed in VTRS, not VNRG. VNRG's role in this picture is narrower: it's what covers the transaction costs involved in claiming or moving those rewards, not the reward itself.
Validators, including VNRG Node, do incur VNRG costs as part of running infrastructure and processing on-chain operations — but the commission income operators earn, and the yield delegators receive, both flow through VTRS. Keeping this distinction clear avoids a common mix-up: thinking that holding or acquiring VNRG somehow increases your staking yield. It doesn't. VNRG is an operating cost of using the network, not a yield-bearing asset in the way VTRS is.
VTRS is for staking and voting — think "ownership." VNRG is for gas and transaction fees — think "usage." If you're delegating or voting, you're using VTRS. If you're sending a transaction, you're spending VNRG.
